Annotation: Applied biology students shall dispose of knowledge related to the genetic, structural and molecular basis of biosynthetic processes associated with the production and reproduction properties and abilities of the organism. They are competent to execute and manage complex biochemical, analytical and microbiological methods as well as techniques of genetic engineering applicable for a targeted construction of highly productive plant variants, animal breeds, including genetically modified organisms suitable for diverse applications. Students will be familiar with subjects related to environmental protection, and are able to fuse creativity with independent work within different activities related to cellular and molecular strategies used for genome mapping, characterization and target gene modification, including techniques used to identify specific molecular markers of economically important traits of plants and animals.
Employability: Applied biology graduates are well prepared to operate primarily in research and education institutions focused on the areas of molecular biology and environmental technology. They are able to creatively turn the gained knowledge into practice in organizations of environmental administration and protection. Potential employers include breeding companies oriented towards the creation of new genetic material taking advantage of molecular genetics. Finally, the graduates may be employed by food production enterprises, actively participating in the creation and innovation of healthy and nutritive food products as well as foods supporting the consumer’s health. Applied biologists are competent to communicate in foreign languages and are familiar with modern information and communication technologies.

Form of study: full-time
Level of study: 2.
Lenght of the programme: 2 years
Study method: attendance
Academic title received: Engineer (Ing.)
Language: Slovak, English
Annotation: Food control and safety graduates are familiar with the principles of the microbiological and chemical food safety procedures horizontally and vertically, as well as the application of an integrated approach from the farm to the table and from the table to the farm. They are capable of managing and supervising the traceability of food products, input and output evaluation, Rapid Alert System analysis and eventual drawback of the food products from the market. Graduates shall apply, develop and assess the Rapid Alert System using mathematical and predictive models as per the preventative principles applicable in the protection of human health and communication connected to the food product safety.
Employability: Graduates may be employed by food production companies and teams in charge of the food protection, as well as industrial laboratories and enterprises focused on the supervision, control and audits. State and private laboratories concerned with food control and safety, advisory and consulting services, food accreditation and legislation as well as risk assessment institutions represent yet another employment opportunity for the graduates. Furthermore, employment may be found in the area of safety management in the distribution and commercial enterprises as well as catering facilities. The graduates may also be employed by secondary education and consulting institutions, counselling centres, international audit institutions and authorities collaborating with the EU in the area of food safety, scientific institutions and research groups.
